Bratislava Sights, Sounds and Hotels
Across from the Bratislava Castle is the massive St. Martin's Cathedral, a spectacular three-aisle Gothic church that was built on the site of a Romanesque church. Construction began with the beginning of the 14th century, but because of adverse political circumstances, the church was not consecrated until 1452. A number of trappings were added over the centuries, but were regrettably removed after several alterations in the first half of the 19th century when the church acquired its present shape. The interior of the church was completed in the 18th century when the famous Austrian sculptor Georg Rafael Donner designed the main altar and a statue of St. Martin cutting off the corner of his cloak for a beggar. A 2x2 m golden pillow carries a 300 kg copy of the Hungarian royal crown atop the 85 m high steeple as an indication that the Cathedral was the coronation church of Hungarian kings between the 16th and 19th centuries. 11 Hungarian kings and 8 royal wives were crowned here, including Empress Maria Theresa.
Bratislava's St. Martin's Cathedral is a fantastic spectacle, and not the only facsinating attraction that you will see in Bratislava. Once you experience the hospitality of the marvellous Bratislava Hotels, you will never want to leave!
