Zagreb Sights, Sounds and Hotels
One of the finest features in Zagreb is Mirogoj, a cemetery which lies in the north of the city. There are striking graves, and English-style landscaping, enclosed by a remarkable extended 19th century neo-Renaissance arcade. Lime trees, Maple trees, Spruces, Wild Chestnuts and other trees line the paths. The official opening of the cemetery was on 6 November 1876, and there were many negative reactions due the close proximity of the cemetery, but these fears were amiss, as today Mirogoj is among the most beautiful of cemeteries in all of Europe. The cemetery was divided up into first class, second class and third class. Mr. Friedrich Singer, a professor of gymnastics and fencing, was the first to be buried here on 7 November 1876, and the city prepared magnificent funeral.
Zagreb's Mirogoj should be made a priority during any visit to Zagreb. You can relax in comfort and peace in any of the marvellous Zagreb Hotels.
